Quasibatak mau ke Medan

Quasibatak will nach Medan

Quasibatak is going to Medan
The anniversary of Yapentra was scheduled for the 29 October. As usual we have lectures during that week, so I had to ask for permission to go. What I did, although the invitation itself does not arrive, I get the permission. On Thursday before the anniversary, finally I received the letter. Likewise Thursday, even before I had the letter, we heard that the whole week would be postponed. Monday was Hindi holiday, Wednesday and Thursday a Meeting, and as usually on Fridays we had no lectures and only Tuesday remained. Since I would not be there and the others preferred to postpone that day as well and get a long long weekend. So many problems just vanish by themselves. But I showed the invitation to our teachers. With a 7-day visa then it went to Medan from 26th October until 1st November.
Among other preparations I had to get a proper clothing - but there was nothing suitable on offer, only sellers who never attend colors lessons, or else were somehow color blind. Finally I solved the problem by buying clothing and took it to the tailor .. however .. the lady did not quite understood what I really wanted .. but at least the size and color suites perfectly.

Quasibatak di Medan

Quasibatak in Medan

Quasibatak in Medan
With the first flight of Firefly over the Straits of Malaka, I went to Medan. - Small plane, about 80 seats .. I had already described. This opportunity involved the media and in Medan we were welcomed with a traditional Batak dance. After I finally had my visa I was welcomed by Bapak and Totas. Hui .. pretty hard to turn back again into the right language, where Indo-Malay are so similar. My poor brain had some difficulties, so that really simple words are not matching the association. And so the first I had to hear was: "I thought you can speak Indonesian" .. yeah..actually I do... Oh deja vu (The same game I played almost exactly 4 years ago with ambiguous words whose both meanings I did not really know at that time.)
The first night I slept in the guest house, then I moved to Kak Lasmi's room (mainly not her room but the place of her clothes) they put a bed in there - where it came from, I found out two days later, when I saw that Totas and Simon had only one remaining - and so I moved to my family and made place for the chairman of the HBM. Not without saying to Bapak which things are still missing in the guesthouse to make a European comfortable there. Unfortunately, I did not try out the air conditioning. Which did not work properly and takes again one day of time and nerves.
Otherwise Medan was as always. The blind and the others were pleased to see me as always. I helped in the house, office and also Wilma in their German studies and there was always something to do for me, to answer, to talk. A few of the students had to make an interview for their English classes and I was shocked how horrible there English knowledge is. Even the same game we had already 4 years ago. It seems Pakam has still the same English teacher.

Pendeta Martin

Reverent Martin
During the 30th Anniversary, I finally had the honor of meeting the new chairman of the Hildesheimer Blind Mission in person. How far you have to travel sometimes. But I did not had any chance to go to Hildesheim. Previously, we got a little confusing call from Hildesheim to tell us that Mr. Martin's plane would be late. Once again, English language barriers .. Asian English is not British English. Nevertheless it worked out well and I had the incredible luck to attend a preparatory meeting of the festival which took place briefly before we went to the airport. So I knew in advance how the wind blows. Always an advantage in an environment where you do not understand every single word.
We were still waiting for a while, until the plain arrived from Singapore and so we had a lot of time to puzzle what our host probably will be like. Eventually he came out of the airport building. A porter were also present and too many taxi drivers looking for work as always until late into the night. Nobody took any attention to the porter after the luggage was in the car and so I gave him the small bit pocket money a guest in Yapentra gave me previously.
Rev. Martin impressed me buring the short time in Medan, by not only doing many intercultural mistakes as inevitable, but in this short period he also succeed in impressing Yapentra so that all his further mistakes immediate will be forgiven. And all presumably even without really noticing it.

******************************
The thirtieth anniversary of Yapentra was as following: until the early afternoon the blind been dressed. And me too. Batak hairstyle are fascinating. And among the make-up and clothes even the former chairman of the HBM barely recognized me.. And me myself it took me a few recognizing all those people I met before. But much more they thought I am Kathi, who was 2.5 years ago volunteer in Yapentra.
With - I guess - 8 buses which usually oscillate between Medan, Tanjung Morawa and Lubuk Pakam, we and the Yapentra children went to a restaurant in Medan, in which I been before I think.. the Paramount. Here we were sitting idly for a while talking with many people around us that we never or didn't for long or only recently have seen before waiting that the event will begin sometime. Times are approximate in Indonesia.
Then a church service followed. After the church service was the "Happy Birthday" singing and the cutting down of the giant cake, but for time and organizational reasons not divided. Instead the people in charge got a piece of another cake. Then we had dinner and the musical entertainment, announced by a moderator who could not afford to comment into the beautiful music of the Blind. What a pity. We eat rice, fried fish, even you could hardly discover the fish between the bread crumbs, chicken, Chapchai (= kind of Chinese vegetables), and for the region rather uncommon: There was no pork. And for dessert regional fruit.
After the dinner followed the speeches, which were all very similar: For a few hours all important guests were welcomed and then followed a brief message and a thank you. That's all. Only Ref Rutkies did it somehow different and I had to translate. What proved to be incredibly difficult. 1st He held the speech in English and some words I could not fast enough turn around in my head that they get out of my mouth Indonesian. I simply didn't know the matching German synonym. And what was even worse, because he was talking into a mic, I heard him also as echo and thus certainly I did not understood a word. That we could change. And with the English words that I didn't knew the bishop helped me out.
After the speech a stone tablet was signed for the opening ceremony of the new girls home, and as all keynote speakers finished there welcome++ the honor ceremony toke place. Each honored guest received a reminder table, a flower and one of the books printed by us. Me too but not on stage but less formally directly on my table. Rev Achilles and Rev Rutkies also got an Ulos. Just as it should be.
Eventually the celebration conclude by prayers and blessings, cleaning up and going home. The bus driver still did not really want to believe on the way back that I am the daughter of bpk Hutauruk and Ibu Silitonga.

******************************************
A week Medan
And what else did happen in Medan: I was instructed to accompany Ref Rutkies. Whether visiting Yapentra went, attending a meeting or a sign seeing through Medan. Bapaks computer in the office I had to convince that there are some more pages in the Internet than just www.yapentra.com. The new girls' dormitories were opened. And Yapentra has almost no ducks any more, not because they poorly took care but: The ducks were not clever enough to survive, so the explanation Bapak gave. Presumably bird flu.
Overall, I was so busy there and felt at home there again so that I my mind simply remaind in Medan as my body was already back in Penang.
The opening of the new girl's homes were hold as follows: All the girls were gathered in front of the tape-blocked door. Then the scissors were handed over to ref Rutkies who cut the tape while praying and then opened the door. The same thing also happened at the 2nd House, only the bishop toke the honorable part with the scissors. Then we continued the celebration inside the first house, ref Rutkies and the bishop blessed the girls by putting grains of rice on their heads and then a church service were held. Eventually, we had coffee, tea and a spacial traditional cake for only on this occasion: In Banana leaves subdued rice flour pudding filled with red sugar. There are quite similar things on other occasions ..
My last celebration in Medan was the traditional Batak goodbye dinner what a mother has to prepare before the daughter are leaving for a long time. Actually it consists of Ikan Emas - goldfish, not eatable because of its too many bones, but Oh ho .. You do not know the Batak! - But because we did not had goldfish a chicken was prepared instead.

Bulan puasa Ramahdan

***********************************
I still haven't told you about the month of fasting (Bulan Puasa). Well, characteristic number 1: There is less selection of food. The very competent lady from the DAAD who teaches German over here, claims that there would be no food on the whole campus - but that proved to be exactly as correct as her preservation that the campus will be completely closed after 11.59pm. According to Mei May, the students climb over the wall at night or take the - always open – gate behind the campus. Because local students are extremely night active. As I said, the Malay food courts are all closed. But there are still many Indians and Chinese. And their food. After 4pm form no where food stands a growing up like moshrooms in the rain and if you want you can try the whole diversity of the Malay traditional snacks and meals. With Mei May - the name says, of Chinese orgin - I explored the stands and the evening restaurants. However, we also had to wait the food just as long as the Muslims. Fast break is after 7pm

Balik Kampung I – Kuala Kedah

*********************************************
The most important at lent is eating. And at the end of lent, everyone goes back to their home village - as I know Asian festivals – and will even eat more. My mates planned and booked their holidays for long, as I was still waiting for that happening, which I would most like to do. Ikut BALIK Kampung. Going into the villages to a Muslim family. Waiting pays out. 2 Invitation I've got. The first led me to Kuala Kedah, about 2 hours north of Pinang. A student of our teacher invited me. The family was incredibly heartly. 5 children, all girls. The father drove us through the area to a monument for the Sultan, a Ramahdanmarkt, where we bought almost everything, what I never eaten before, and the next day to a rice museum and a mountain, which suddenly appears without warning, in the middle of the flat rice fields standing with its steep cliffs. For fast break in the evening we tried all these delicacies indescribable things. There were so much different food on the table that, even if you only tried a tiny little bit form everything on the table, you truly will be full. The mother gave me a traditional Muslim cloth, which she, tailor, had made herself, and I had very interesting conversations with the father and mother of the family. In the rice museum, there was a 360 º painting. To admire, we climbed a staircase into a high dome, sat down there and the platform began to move in 15 minutes around in a circle. Fterwords we went to foot of the mountain, where the monkeys made the playground uncertain, and then unfortunately I alreay had to get back to the bus station to get my next invitation in time.
